Texas, Guide Dogs for the Blind puppy-in-training

Great news!! Texas is in class to graduate as a working Guide Dog for the Blind. He and his new partner will be graduating on October 18th, 2003 from the Boring, OR campus of GDB. Congrats to both of them!

Texas at 5 months old

Texas was born on October 7th, 2001 at the San Rafael, CA campus of Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Texas was just 10 weeks old when the following pictures were taken:

Texas, age 10 weeks. This is my favorite of all of the pictures, I love how it looks like a sepia print, even though it isn't.

Here are pictures of Texas and his new mom Lisa and Texas and Nancy on the day Lisa picked Texas up for his move to Salt Lake City. Texas will now be raised by Lisa and her family until his return to Guide Dogs for advanced training. Texas is almost 16 weeks old in the pictures. (He still has the sort of shell-shocked look that he had in his bath pictures, below.) :-) Compare his size in these pictures to the one immediately below, and you'll see how much he's grown in just 5 short weeks!

Texas and Nancy by the yule tree
Texas and Nancy by the yule tree. Texas is 10 weeks old in this picture, taken the night he was delivered to Utah. Texas is a lovely pale champagne color, very cuddly and sweet.

Here is a picture of Santa presenting Texas to me. We also have a picture of Texas and his brother, Tobin (on the left) and another pup named Strand that was presented at the same yule party. All very adorable!

Texas was slated to be a "starter" pup in my home, which means I got him started on housetraining and good manners, then after a month or so, he was transfered to a home that will "finish" him. (Some people, due to work or lifestyle, just can't handle having a very young puppy around and opt to work with dogs that are 4 months or older.) Texas actually went to the same "finish" home that my other starter puppy Lafferty went to, so I know he'll have a great time and do great when it comes time to go back for training.

Here are a couple of shots of Texas getting his first bath and then chewing frantically on a chewtoy in the post-bath frenzy. He did puppy laps all over the family room after he was out and dried off, then settled in to chew on his toys for a few minutes.
