To the editor, 21-Feb-1998 About two and a half years ago, during some public discussion about bicycle facilities and the importance of bicycle helmets, I wrote a letter to the editor promoting bicycle safety education. At that time, I mentioned the existence of a very thorough bicycle safety program developed and offered by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB). As a result of that letter, I got a few calls from PTA officers asking for more details. I did a little checking and found no LAB bicycle safety instructors in our vicinity. Eventually I did learn of one in Ogden, but she can't easily have a big impact on bicycle safety education in Cache Valley. So I began the task of learning the details and studying the program. I completed my own training last fall in Mesa, Arizona. I am now "Effective Cyclist Instructor #685" and am preparing to offer two modules of the LAB instruction to help local residents who do, or want to, use their bikes to get where they are going. I welcome opportunities to present the "Kids I" video module to parent groups such as PTAs, Relief Societies, and Scout leaders as well as to recreation planners, town councils, editorial boards and others. It is a brief video tape that explains to adults what the real safety issues are for children on bikes. It provides the information to help you give your children better guidance than just to "wear your helmet and watch out for cars." To schedule this presentation for your group, call me at 752-8386 or contact Bob.Bayn@usu.edu on the Internet. I have made arrangements with the Logan Recreation Center and the USU Outdoor Recreation program to offer the "Road I" course this spring. Watch for their Spring Schedule brochures. The classroom and on-the-road course is completed in three sessions (evenings or Saturdays). It covers simple maintenance, correct bicycle fit, traffic principles and law, hazards, and emergency maneuvering skills. Bob Bayn North Logan 797-2396(w) 752-8386(h)
